Etymology: Borneo + International Scientific Vocabulary -ol
: a crystalline cyclic terpenoid alcohol C10H17OH known in three optically different forms distinguished as dextrorotatory borneol, levorotatory borneol, and racemic borneol, found in many essential oils (as pine oils), formed by reduction of camphor, and used chiefly in the form of esters (as the acetate) in perfumery — called also bornyl alcohol; see isoborneol

a white, translucent, lumpy, very slightly water-soluble, solid terpene alcohol, C10H18O, occurring in various isomeric forms, having a burning, mintlike taste, obtained from the trunk of a tree, Dryobalanops aromatica, or by the reduction of camphor: used in the form of its esters in the manufacture of synthetic camphor and in perfumery. Also called Borneo camphor, bornyl alcohol, camphol, Malayan camphor, Sumatra camphor.
